David Bowie fans, where art thou? [Jan. 5th, 2010|08:30 pm]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“The Thin White Duke Resurrected By Generation of Adolescent Boston Rockers”

CAMBRIDGE and SOMERVILLE
- English singer David Bowie (born David Jones on January 8th, 1947) has been called a cultural chameleon throughout his long and colorful career. From music and film to art and the Internet, Bowie has challenged the perceptions of fans and critics alike with his many malleable personas which seemed to mirror the cutting edge trends of the day.

Two separate and very different venues will be the site of performances by the Paul Green School of Rock Boston students in a tribute to Ziggy Stardust himself.

On Friday, 1/22 @ 7:00 PM, the show kicks off at the Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre (http://www.cambridgeymca.org). Tickets are $10 in advance/$12 at the door and this event is 100% ALL-AGES and open to the public.

Like a whirlwind mini-tour, the very next day (Saturday, 1/23) finds the School of Rockers at that historic Davis Square landmark, Johnny D’s Place on 17 Holland Street in Somerville. This show manifests itself as a pre-suppertime attraction, running from 4:00-6:00 PM. Johnny D’s will be serving a full menu for hungry Boston-area music fans, so come out for dinner and a show! Once again, tickets are $10 in advance/$12 at the door and this event is 100% ALL-AGES and open to the public.

Visit School of Rock Boston’s website at http://www.schoolofrock.com/boston or call the School at 617-923-3434 for advance ticketing information.

In Search of J. P. Miller [Jan. 5th, 2010|06:39 pm]

Several years ago, animation historian John Canemaker did an exhaustive and very informative two-part article on the life and career of John Parr Miller, aka J. P. Miller for the ASIFA magazine, “Cartoons”. I’ve had the great pleasure of owning the two issues that featured this article and for a long time had the notion of sharing it somehow with others. Well, no need to now. NY animator Michael Sporn beat me to it and now you guys can see both parts of the article on his blog:

Part One
Part Two

There’s some wonderful early work of Miller’s that Canemaker was able to show us, including this portrait of Mary Blair, whom J.P. traveled with (along with other artists) to South America during Disney’s “Good Neighbor” Tour of 1941.

How to Draw Adventure Time [Jan. 5th, 2010|04:41 pm]

How to Draw Adventure Time

I can’t imagine characters more fun to draw!

Looks like Fred Seibert is sharing a whack of stuff on Scribd, for various animated shows, including scripts, storyboards, media kits, and character bibles like this one.

Love this bit:

We’re not looking for “on model” drawings.
We’re looking for “in character” drawings.

In the Studio with Mort Drucker [Jan. 5th, 2010|02:49 pm]

Stephen Silver offers us this glimpse at his latest efforts for the Schoolism online art classes. The Masters Series: In the Studio With… is an ongoing documentary/interview series conducted by Stephen in the home studios of some cartooning greats. The first episode features iconic MAD Magazine caricaturist and parody artist Mort Drucker.

Stephen is as passionate about teaching others to love drawing as he is about drawing itself, so this is sure to be a great collection.

This short clips only whets my appetite for the full video, which will set you back $40.

At what point is it too late for new year posts? You’re all still just settling back into work, right? Anyway, Christopher Harrup put together this swell animated new years card and you can find a short production journal over at his site.

I AM DONEEEEE!! Ah, I am officially completely done my undergrad. I mean I'm awaiting final marks for two (and got two A- marks respectively) but I'm fairly confident I did not fail the other two courses.

New Years was great, low key and inexpensive. I spent it at a friends house in Toronto with some people I knew from Waterloo. Initially it was a little bit awkward, because I knew very few people but everyone was super nice and it was SO great to catch up with people! I went into it with NO expectations and it turned out to be lovely. The champagne hit me a little harder than I expected after midnight rolled around, so the end of the night is a little hazy but all in all it was great. I would write some more but it's back to work bright and early tomorrow, so instead I'll leave you with some New Year's photos after the jump!

here they are for real )

Alright, that's it for now. I'm off to do the other six hundred things on my to do list for tonight. xx <3

Q:What does it take to make you fall in love?

Answer: Umm..You have to start with the tough ones, no?

I suppose it boils down to unflagging loyalty.  To my peccadilloes, insecurity, uncontrollable bouts of weeping and fierce libido.  And something about having to keep up with me when I'm drinking.  Of course there's more, but let's just simplify to I love women who can adventure alongside me.

On the Winter Horizon [Jan. 4th, 2010|04:33 pm]

jilsynchro
[mood | hopeful]

So, here's an upcoming list of events in my life:

1. Next Monday: start class again. I feel like this return to classes will be less depressing than it normally is. Ask me again on Sunday night, and I'm sure my tune will change. But right now I am generally optimistic.

2. This year my in-laws gave a present to all of their children: marriage retreats. We were supposed to go to Newport, Rhode Island for ours but we can't that weekend (see #4). So, instead, we are going to Nashua, New Hampshire on Valentine's Day weekend. Newport is a cool town with mansions and tons of character and Nashua is, um, a glorified suburb with lots of strip malls (where people from Massachusetts go when they want to shop tax-free). But that's how it works out, I guess. Anyway, they are going to come here and watch Anders and Audra while we go on our getaway. I have very mixed emotions about this situation.

3. The winter Olympics start February 12!!! As per tradition, we will watch the opening ceremonies while eating cuisine from the host country...so if anyone knows where we can get Canadian food in Nashua... Anyway. I <3 the winter Olympics. They can do things that I just truly cannot. Like, most people can run or swim or whatever. But how many people can land a triple axel or do a stalefish grab on the halfpipe? Not me. I can't skate, ski, or snowboard to any degree, nevermind while doing sweet tricks along the way.

4. On March 6, we are going to see Muse! I am insanely excited about this, as I have not been to a concert since Anders was born (and Reel Big Fish while 5 months pregnant was really awkward...mosh pits and unborn children just don't mix that well). I am anticipating dinner in the North End before the show.

5. February is a depressing month, so for the entire month, we will have cheery fresh cut flowers all month, without regard to cost. I did this last year, and it really made it a much better worst 28 days of the year.

6. FYI, it's going to be the Year of the Tiger on January 26. Just thought you'd be interested to know.

Beat Of The Drums. . . . [Jan. 4th, 2010|05:45 am]

tranceptor
So I saw all of the remaining episodes of David Tennants final run as The Doctor. All in a single sitting no less, which is the best way I think.

The first, Planet of the Dead was good. I love episodes where characters are trapped in any science fiction show, I don't know why but I always find them so much fun seeing the characters try to figure a way out. And I adore Michelle Ryan, more so because I had no idea she would be in this episode so it was an unexpected bonus.

Waters of Mars was FANTASTIC, the scene with him walking away while everyone else is facing certain doom. . . that was some powerful stuff. Though I wish they had kept going that route, more so because he was right the first time. It was just too important a moment in history for him to alter. It faltered for me at the end a bit, I think it should have had greater rammifications than just a few slight alterations in some text. I think human history should have changed significantly to stress the point that he shouldn't have altered history the way he did.

The two part christmas special was good, doubly so because while watching it I thought it was odd that it had a narrator, but then it followed up with me going "Is that Timothy Dalton!?!?" Which was immediated proceeded with "Holy shit it's the Time Lords!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I was a little put off with their inclusion of The Master as I was pretty much done with his character after his last appearance, but they made it work. . . . less so his super-power-esqe abilities, but they managed to just pull it off. Though only because they finally explained the drums and just why The Master was insane, that was a really nice touch. This sorta "I NEVER would have guessed that!" type of thing. But bringing back the Time Lords, that was EPIC for me. I was so excited. Oh and the four knocks was a surprise as well, out of everyone, I never even considered that the knocks would come from that character. When it happened, it was this sorta quiet "Oh shit." moment, cause you KNOW the Doctor is going to die. From the first of the four episodes, you know its coming. So just when you start to think that he's escaped it, he hasn't.

I was sad to see Tennant leave, for me he ranks up there with Baker as my favourite Doctor. He was good, his Doctor was fun and energetic and had these dark moments, but always managed to come out of it without getting too sullied. He was idealistic to a fault and I didn't agree with him more than a few times, but it all made his Doctor that much more interesting. He got a nice send off though, all the cameos were wonderful. Though I was less than pleased to find that Mickey had married Martha, it seemed a bit wierd. But seeing the Doctor go through time and help out past characters was great. The kid threw me for a moment, but then I realized who he was. Seeing Captain Jack Harkness was GREAT. I was all "OMG it's Captain Jack!" Though out of all of them, seeing Rose again was my favourite moment. Cause. . .well, it's Rose and I always loved her. Her time on the show was just wonderful and Piper had fantastic chemestry with Tennant. It was just a really sweet moment because underneath it all, he loved her and in your last moments that is always going to be the person you want to see most.

If I could have changed anything about that last bit, I would have added K-9.

As for the new guy. . . . . I'm really on the fence, I didn't like his introduction, I think he looked a bit wierd and really. . . young. But as always I'm going to give the new guy a chance before I decide. But in all fairness, it's really hard to make a good impression as the replacement after the previous guy had such an emotional send off.

But I hope he does well, after all this is the 11th incarnation (if my count is right) so if he doesn't work out then they really only have one shot to find someone better. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed both for the new Doctor and the next season of Torchwood.
