Welcome to my art, news, and sketch blog. Here you will find whatever news items I have to share about my work, as well as lots of drawings and paintings that are not in my main website gallery. I tend to keep that gallery up-to-date with just my recent favorites, so here you can see a lot more (older stuff and random sketches). Thank you for visiting. -Jaye |

| Sketchbook Zine Update |
[May. 18th, 2012|12:35 am] |
Hi everyone,
Things are great lately. I've got a bunch of new prints available in the shop, and the fundraiser for The Sparrow Fund is continuing through the end of May.
Along with a very busy time at my day job, I've been spending lots of time working on the fourth issue of the Thirteenth Story art zine. I'm very excited about how it is turning out, especially since I thought none of these drawings would ever see the light of day.
Tonight I finished the back cover, taa daa:

And the front cover is slated to be done this weekend. It looks like this is going to be double-sized (compared to issues 1-3), and in full color! I found a very nice heavyweight paper that I can use to print these in my studio with no bleed-through, and they will staple together well and still fit into a normal envelope. I'm pretty excited about this one.
Watch this space for more previews and the announcement of when it is finally available.
Thanks, Jaye

| New Red Thread Prints |
[May. 9th, 2012|03:56 pm] |
In honor of the "Building The Nest" fundraiser for the Sparrow Fund, I stayed up late last night drawing two more variations of my Red Thread drawing. These two are a lot simpler looking, and include the story of the Red Thread. Hopefully they will look nice on your walls, too. Check them out at my etsy shop here.
Be well, Jaye

| Big Update in My Etsy Shop |
[May. 6th, 2012|09:49 pm] |
As part of the fundraising drive for The Sparrow Fund, I've taken some time this weekend to put eleven (yes, eleven!) new prints in the Thirteenth Story Etsy Shop. The whole month of May is a great time to buy, because not only are you supporting handmade goods bought directly from the artist, but you will be supporting The Sparrow Fund, who are committed to helping families through the adventure of adoption. This month, 10% of all my sales go directly towards their Building The Nest Fundraiser. So, thank you for checking out the shop, and have an awesome week.
Thank you, Jaye

Hey everyone, I just added a new print in my etsy shop, and will be adding more all month. For the month of May I will be donating 10% of all sales to The Sparrow Fund, a charity committed to supporting families going through the long process and adventure of adoption. I appreciate your help, and thanks you for looking at my shop.
Be well, Jaye Thirteenth Story

| The Sketchbooks |
[Apr. 6th, 2012|11:02 pm] |
Last Fall there was a local art gallery exhibit that included 90 Notebooks from a famous Graphic Designer, around which his finished pieces were juxtaposed. I was a little bummed that his notebooks were under glass and opened to pages that didn't really interest me, because I was hoping to flip through them. Online, I enjoy seeing people's sketchbooks (clicking-through digital scans of the pages), but I was looking forward to holding and spending time with his actual books instead.

It got me thinking about the body of work behind the finished work of any artist. Some interesting stuff can happen in those sketchbooks, things that are looser than the finished works and things that were not intended to be shared.

So, I'm working on my fourth zine right now, and I am calling it Thirteenth Story: The Sketchbooks. It is a full-color issue with a large selection of pages from my own sketchbooks over the years, and some of the thoughts behind them. I spent some time this weekend scanning over 40 pages from 15 sketchbooks, and I have about 15 more to go through. Here are a few pages from a recent moleskine-style book.

I'm testing a heavier paper in my printer, and depending on how that test goes, the new zine will be available by the beginning of May. Watch this space for more details.
Thanks, Jaye

| Back on the Runway |
[Apr. 3rd, 2012|05:07 pm] |
Well, it is that time of year again, when CBR hosts the Comic Book Runway drawing and character design competition, called CBRunway. I have participated for the past few years, and even made it as a finalist last year (only to bag-out because in real life I bought a house and moved the week of the finale).
This year is a little different, in that there are less contestants, and no eliminations during the weekly rounds. Instead, each week voting points accumulate until the finale, where the three contestants with the most total points are entered into a Fashion-Week-style-round, where a collection will be designed, then from there, a winner chosen.
I'll keep you posted on how it is going for me this year. In the meantime, here are the first three drawings I have done:

The Challenge: An audition round, designing a hero and a villain directly on a style-sheet we were given. No character story, no facial features or hair, just clothing design.
My Description: My heroic costume is a military-inspired look. It is made of a flexible, weatherproof fabric, re-enforced with light padding in the pants, and a bulletproof vest under the blouse; there are convenient pouches for supplies. The helmet and boots are both heavy-duty and ultra-protective to avoid injury.
My villainous look is inspired by a traditional biker-chick look. The material is a weave of kevlar and synthetic patent leather; the pants are fireproof and padded; the vest is studded. There is also a protective helmet with visor, an arm-band for ammo, and pointy-heeled biker boots which double as a weapon.
And...

The Challenge: Round One was to design a Silver Age Comic Hero based upon a 1960's music icon. I chose Jim Morrison of The Doors.
My Description: Jim Morrison is The Lizard King This costume is inspired by one of Morrison's poems (and his self-given nickname). The Lizard King costume is made from a flexible waterproof spandex, which he wears to protect his secret identity, more than to protect his skin-- which has been altered and super-strengthened by a chemically tainted dose of LSD. His hands are covered by long gloves that expand with his fingers into sticky-lizard-like appendages (great for climbing); his boots are also waterproof and have lizard-like scales on them.
That's all for now. Thanks for checking them out.

| Mastodon contest |
[Mar. 3rd, 2012|11:16 am] |
Recently I worked on a drawing inspired by the song Dry Bone Valley by Mastodon for a contest. Here is the outcome, and if you are inclined to vote for it the link is here (you need a twitter or facebook account to vote).

Watercolor, ink, and acrylic on illustration board. 12 x 12.
And yes, I'm alive. I've been traveling, and then got very sick, but I am all better now and will be posting trip pics soon.
Thanks, Jaye

| Red Coat |
[Dec. 23rd, 2011|12:16 am] |

The real piece is actually three painted squares of board glued together. I simulated the background in photoshop, and its kind of close, but the depth in person in rather nice. When the glue dries, I'll take a photo of the real thing and post it.
I like the lines of the coat, and obviously, the colors are my usual thing. This was done in a day, the coat taken from a sketch I had done last week, and the rest is ink and acrylic paints. There is a series of blue watercolor swirls behind the coat, but the scan kind of washed them out and make them hard to see.
I've got other drawings going now, and wanted to post something new since that last one was so morbid. I will add photos when I can. Be well.
Thanks.
